I think there is something wrong in the upper part of the picture. Where does the CH3O- come from? I think it should be "+CH3O-", because we need to deprotonate the Nitromethane to achieve the reaction we want. It's the same like the first part of the Henry-reaction: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/85/Henry_Reaktion_Mechanismus1.svg
