Ship identification

[edit]

=This page states that the tanker Esso New Orleans was rebuilt as a container ship at Todd Shipyards, Hoboken, in 1962, using a new middle section built at Schlieker Werft in Hamburg, and towed across the Atlantic by Dutch tug Thames. This matches the info provided with the photo, so presuming this is that ship (which was named Elizabethport). There were three other tankers similarly converted to container ships by Sea-Land in 1962/3. The Esso Trenton/Esso Chattanooga was rebuilt into the San Francisco, but its new section was built at Blohm & Voss, and was rebuilt at Bethlehem Steel, Baltimore, so it's not that one. The Esso Albany/Esso Bethlehem was rebuilt into the Los Angeles, at Bethlehem Steel, Hoboken, in 1963, but its new middle section was also built at Blohm & Voss[1], so it's not that one either. The Esso Raleigh was rebuilt into the San Juan by Bethlehem Steel, Hoboken, and its new section was also built at Schlieker Werft, but no information on when or what tug towed it from Germany. That ship was not completed until May 1963, whereas the the Elizabethtown was completed in August 1962, so I think the photo is most likely of the earlier ship.
