Not number of neutrons

[edit]

Hello, as far as I understand the stellar nucleosynthesis, the X-axis of the figure is wrong. It is not the number of neutrons but the mass number. This should be fixed. This picture should also be converted into SVG. Pamputt (talk) 10:55, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I made this figure and also use it for teaching in my university class. Thanks for your concern but the x-axis label IS correct, it is the number of neutrons. This is why isotopes of one element (identified by the proton number) are on one horizontal line. The mass number is given inside the boxes for each nuclide. --TRauscher (talk) 12:26, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@TRauscher: indeed it can be read as you say. In addition, this is the classical representation of the chart of nuclides (Z vs N). Yet it is a bit confusing since the numbers given in the boxes are the mass numbers and not the neutron numbers. Anyway, it is not really important since the mass number is just a shift with regard to the neutron number. I will precise the caption to say explicitly that the numbers in the boxes are the mass numbers. I also created a SVG version of this file if you are interested. Sorry for the noise because I did not see before that Limulus asked you about this point on your talk page two years ago... Pamputt (talk) 21:30, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
