I think that there's a conflict of projection systems between the basemap and the distribution (range) shapefiles. Note that the basemap of Spain looks elongated in along the east-west axis. You may want to convert the base map to the same coordinate projection as the shapefiles. Also, where did the basemap come from? I'd like to find some nice shaded-relief maps like this for my maps!
