This is the finest model of the Famous 1908 Emden I've ever seen. She is depicted in 1914 wartime gray livery and the detail is amazing. However, someday I would like to see Emden in tropical white and bronze, as she was before the war when her nickname was "The Swan of the East". One could wish for more views to appreciate the great workmanship represented here. (Those wanting to try a smaller version will find Revell makes a good 1/350 scale kit, 34 cm long, for under $20 that will keep you busy a month doing it right.) Where is this model displayed? I looked the page over but missed any reference.

I'm a classic ameteur historian, specializing in the 1880-1920 era. Have 4 books on the Emden so far and many about WW1. The cruise of the SMS Emden under the chivalrous Captain Karl von Muller is worth enjoying in this day, 94 years later, when we so often consider ourselves more civilized. His record of ~30 ships captured (neutrals soon released) and no civilians killed is difficult to comprehend when the propaganda of the World Wars demonizes all things German. In fact the entire set of German "raider" captains in WW1 (and generally WW2 as well) treated all civilians with utmost humanity. Further, the majority of those surviving that war opposed the rise of the Nazi's. (See: Felix von Luckner elsewhere and the Luckner Society at http://luckner-society.com/)

As one example, von Muller was an influential witness at the trial sending Hitler to prison after the Beer Hall Putsch. His political party (German Nationalist) was one of those who opposed the Nazi's in the streets during the republic. It is most unfortunate Von Muller died of malarial complications age 49 in 1923, partly due to the ill treatment he received as POW from the British. Germany and the World might've been much the better for it had they done otherwise.

It is my hope that someone like Director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) will put this story on film. There is much the epic tale of the Emden and the men around her would enlighten our World concerning it's present course.
