this is sms derfflinger, not sms hindenburg (see the tripod)

Also, the lack of funnel caps and the flag bridge gives this ship away as Derfflinger. Parsecboy (talk) 19:25, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
One more difference between the two ships seems to have been the number of 15 cm guns they were equipped with. Looking at this particular photo and File:Hindenburg_scapa_(cropped).jpg and comparing the sides of the ships, it would appear that the ship in this photo has a some sort of gap in place of one the gun casemates. All three Derfflinger class ships originally had 14 (7+7) of these guns, but Derfflinger had two of them removed at some point, leaving 12 in total. --Methem (talk) 09:39, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Note: This is the battlecruiser Derfflinger, not Hindenburg. The chief identifying characteristics are the widely splayed tripod legs and the lack of both a flag bridge and funnel caps. Compare the superstructure with File:SMS Hindenburg sunk.jpg." An August 2009 note by user Parsecboy, moved here from the file summary. --Methem (talk) 08:06, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
