File talk:Rockaway Line after Hurricane Sandy vc.jpg
Looks like the filled-in sand bar was completely washed-away by Superstorm Sandy. They used a lot of sand from the nearby Idlewild International Airport's (todays JFK Airport) construction to fill-in the areas where the old wooden trestle was. When completed, they essentially buried the old wooden trestle under a tremendous amount of sand, then created this man-made island in the middle of Jamaica Bay for the reconstructed Rockaway Line to run on top of. When Superstorm Sandy hit, it essentially washed-away this man-made island exposing large sections the old wooden trestle that remained undamaged by the 1950 fire buried by the sand.
