[edit]

@Jeff5102, couldn't an ashtray with a “good bye” mean something else than a cigarette advertisement (= the category you added)? Or do you mean a negative (anti-smoking) ad? -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 17:38, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Renardo la vulpo, My consideration was that it was made by a photo news agency., Photo agencies often happen to supply (stock) photos for advertisements. I thought this was the case here.
But I was wrong. The "Rhodesia Sigaretten"-story is thisː right after the liberation of the Netherlands in May 1945, there was a shortage of tobacco. To let smokers have their cigarettes, the brand of Rhodesia cigarettes was createdː a stinking, bad-tasting "stink-stick" of low-quality tobacco from Rhodesia. These were rationed among smokers. Anyway, a year later, when the import of better-quality tobacco became possible again, people were happy to say Rhodesia farewell and switch to superior brands. Hence the "good bye" in the picture.
So your doubts on this picture being a cigarette advertisement were valid. I will remove the category. I already added the category "Rationing in the Netherlands after World War II." If you know a better category or other categories that fit in, please feel free to add it. Kind regards, Jeff5102 (talk) 07:34, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
