Orientation

[edit]

I'm struggling to recognise the buildings here, in order to work out which end of Victoria station this was, and hence whether that is the southern portal of Mansfield Road Tunnel or the northern portal of Weekday Cross tunnel. I guess that if I believe the date (1980s) it must be the northern end, because by then the southern end had been completely obscured by the Victoria Centre. But I'm a bit suspicious of the date; the picture looks earlier than that. Chris j wood (talk) 13:48, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I believe this is the northern end of the station, looking towards the south portal of Mansfield Road Tunnel. If you compare the image with the one here, the main red building on the right side of the picture at the top of the cutting is visible in both. At some point before 1985, that red building (and the row of houses on Woodborough Rd) was demolished and replaced with the one in the image here. As I understand it, the south portal is now heavily overgrown by vegetation and there are (or were) plans to develop the Victoria Centre which may result in it becoming inaccessible. I don't recall exactly when the image was taken, most probably the late 1970s or early 1980s when the car park was relatively new and a good view could be had from the top deck down to the tunnel. The car park was later extended northwards in the 90s, if I'm not mistaken, so that viewpoint is no longer possible. If it helps date the image at all, it could pre-date this one, which is said to be in c1979 and shows the portal as boarded up. Lamberhurst (talk) 15:40, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
