Mistaken identity

[edit]

This painting was previously claimed to represent the French Neptune. This is mistaken, the ship shown bow on is in fact the British Neptune, identified as such in Ann Parry's The Admirals Fremantle, and John Terraine's Trafalgar. There is a slightly clearer image here.

  • The ship on her port side is clearly shown flying Spanish ensigns. She is in fact the 136-gun Spanish Santissima Trinidad, distinguishable by her distinctive red and black bands on her hull, and her four gundecks. Neptune duelled Santissima Trinidad for much of the battle, firing broadsides into her starboard side as shown in the painting.
  • Neptune herself is flying the white ensign from her stern, and a white pennant from her mainmast. Benea (talk) 21:51, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
