This photograph was almost certainly taken at the port of Villefranche, France, in July, 1869 when these officers of the European Squadron could have been together. Paymaster H. P. Tuttle is standing second from left, not third. The Lieutenant standing second from right is Morris R. S. MacKenzie, who served on the USS Guard 1868-69, and not Alexander Slidell MacKenzie, who was killed in 1867. See Hamersly, The Records of Living Officers of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, Third Edition, 1878, p. 226, and ship logs of the European Squadron, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington.
