Northern Europe

[edit]

Britain and Ireland are in Northern Europe, if this is not corrected I will request deletion due to inaccuracy. Izzedine (talk) 06:15, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Northern Europe proper is composed of the Nordic countries (Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland) and the Baltic states (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia). The British Isles (Great Britain and Ireland) are sometimes included in Northern Europe (as the map says) but primarily are part of Western Europe (proper).

No, that's 'your' idea of Northern Europe, Geographically, they are in both Northern Europe and Western Europe, they are at the same latitude as Southern Scandinavia and the Baltic states. Please correct the picture. Izzedine (talk) 10:58, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Because they are in both Western Europe and Northern Europe, it means that they are not exclusively in Northern Europe, therefore they are sometimes included in Northern Europe, therefore the map is correct.
What are you trying to say? That every region above a certain latitude is part of Northern Europe?
Scooter20 (talk) 11:03, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of course countries above a certain latitute constitute Northern Europe. Northern Europe isn't a Balto-Scandinavian club, it's a geographic distinction. My problem with this picture is your wording, "Area sometimes included as part of Northern Europe" ought to be substituted with "Area in Northern Europe and Western Europe" or "Northwestern Europe". Izzedine (talk) 11:20, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't agree that latitude alone describes Northern Europe but I agree that the text might be changed to "Northwestern Europe" or something similar that shows that the British Isles are both Western and Norhern European.
I'll make the necessary adjustments when I'll get home and will have some time.
Scooter20 (talk) 11:26, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is latitude alone that defines what is northern and what is southern [1], is that a difficult concept for you? On your Western Europe map you depict Finland as part of Western Europe, but you somehow view that Britain and Ireland are not in Northern Europe. That's ridiculous. Izzedine (talk) 11:38, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Latitude alone defines Northern Europe only climatically and geographically in a very strict way. But Northern Europe is more than that, it's also culturally, linguistically, economically and so on.
I never said the Britain and Ireland are not Northern European. They are not solely Northern European but Western European too. The same goes for Finland.
Scooter20 (talk) 11:58, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The United Nations Classifies Northern Europe as:
   * Åland Islands
   * Channel Islands
   * Denmark
   * Estonia
   * Faeroe Islands
   * Finland
   * Guernsey
   * Iceland
   * Republic of Ireland
   * Isle of Man
   * Jersey
   * Latvia
   * Lithuania
   * Norway
   * Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands
   * Sweden
   * United Kingdom

Self-made images need evidence and scholarly research to be reputable, as your map stands now it is in direct confrontation with the United Nations Geographic Department. Deleted. Celareon (talk) 22:32, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly, I agree. This is just self-made original research and unencyclopedic. It doesn't belong in articles. \//\ 21:53, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
