I have no idea whether this is supposed to show the battle of Marignano. It is certainly so presented by photo.rmn.fr, and thus probably by the Chantilly museum where it is kept. But is it true?

The painting certainly shows the Swiss on the left. But the Swiss have artillery, even if noticeably fewer pieces than the opposing force, something which was apparently not the case at Marignano. Also the Swiss seem to be doing pretty well considering this is supposed this is a battle they lost disastrously, with 50% losses. And finally, in the bottom right corner there seems to be an important death on the other side. While several French commanders were killed at Marignano, the king wasn't. So my conclusion is that this very likely shows the battle of Nancy, or perhaps "the Burgundian Wars" as a whole, and not the Battle of Marignano. Since, by coincidence, this drawing of a "Swiss battle" was made just around 1515, it is not surprising that it subsequently came to be handed around as showing the battle of Marignano. --Dbachmann (talk) 17:08, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
