This map is not from 1738. The War of Succession ended in 1714 and the entire lower right hand corner of Barcelona was demolished to build the military citadel. This map doesn't show this structure, the old neighborhood of La Ribera is still intact, and Barceloneta doesn't exist.

Also, Paul de Rapin died in 1725, so it would have been hard for him to publish a book with this map 13 years after his death.

I would guess that this is from the mid 17th century or possibly even further back given how undeveloped the Raval area is.

  • Well done with the detective work. "c. 1738" is the date given by the source; it's not clear where they got that. According to the relevant WP articles, Rapin's history was written in French and published in 1724. An English translation was published by Nicolas Tindal (d. 1774) in 1727; Tindal later expanded the work, adding his own maps, and published a second edition in 1732. The line at the bottom of this map says "For Mr. Tindal's continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England", so it appears the map was published in 1732. Tindal was not a cartographer but a historian/translator, so it is possible he would have copied a much older map (maybe the map was meant to be historical). I've updated the description page to clarify that, but since you clearly know a lot about the history of Barcelona, maybe you can do better. Rwxrwxrwx (talk) 20:30, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
