The existing building, labeled "Longmont College", is the south wing of a planned larger building which would have straddled 6th Avenue, envisaged as the main building of what was to become a full-scale college. The evidence for this can be seen in the obvious offset of 6th Avenue to the north to accommodate the whole building's straddle of the street.

The College failed after its 1886 beginning and became, variously, a school, a caring place for needy patients, and finally a residential building, its present use.

It has a massive red sandstone base and is a red brick building, carrying a then-fashionable Mansard roof. An addition was made to the south end to accommodate more residential apartments - but not in the style of the original structure.

Interestingly, the Old Main building on the Laramie campus of the University of Wyoming was built with same architectural plans, but built to completion. It was built, seemingly at the same time, 1886, and is still functioning. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rodger Frank Ewy (talk • contribs) 18:58, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
