Yawl?

[edit]

Well shiver my timbers! This is supposed to be a USNA yawl sold off to some other academy. It isn't as I remember it. I checked with some pictures and videos of USNA yawls and they confirmed it. The reason why this vessel as seen cannot be a yawl, and cannot be a USNA yawl as depicted, is that yawls are two-masted. They have a mizzen mast in the rear. The mizzen masts of Academy vessels were rather conspicuous, with a boom of their own. I'm quite sure about this. Sailing downwind, we'd put out the main on one side and the mizzen on the other for a maximum spread. There is no sign of any mizzen on this picture! Strictly by appearance it is a sloop. It can't be a USNA sloop because they have an engine exhaust on the back. No sign of one here. But, the current owners insist that it was the Lively. The possibilites seem as follows. It isn't the Lively. It is the Lively but the photo was altered. It is the Lively but the vessel was altered. Have any knowledge?Botteville (talk) 01:21, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
