In personal correspondence with the archivist at the Boston Athenaeum (Oct. 1, 2019), the subject of this painting is no longer considered to be William Stoughton, nor the painter to be Duyckinck:

"this painting was determined to be of unclear provenance in the 1930s, as it was purchased in the 1920s from Frank Bayley who was suspected of fraud in the 30s and 40s- purchasing portraits of unknown sitters and selling them as "colonial" portraits of notable sitters. This discovery led the Athenaeum to remove its attribution to Duyckinck; it is now simply titled 'Portrait of a Man'."

I will be working on fixing this item. Ogram (talk) 16:12, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
