Warping

[edit]

After User:Abbe98,'s edit, it looked a little bit stretched, maybe due to flaws in the original. After User:DutchTreat's edit, it looks like a comet. The area that should be over central Jordan extends to the Iraqi border. Here is a tile (I hope the url preserves the png it was rendered here). Danny lost (talk) 19:26, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the trick is to use as few points as possible and spread them out. Now there are several points next to each other causing issues. Abbe98 (talk) 19:48, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Danny lost and Abbe98: Added cities in the corners. After warping, it's looking better to my eye. If there is still too much warping, then we can try Rectify > Advanced Options > Rectify Method > 1st Order Polynomial. Let me know your thoughts. - DutchTreat (talk) 15:27, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@DutchTreat: It looks like the errors now are in the range of a few kilometers. It's probably good enough for a small scale oldish map. Thanks. I wonder if cropping the shape deeper into the margins will tune it in better? Danny lost (talk) 07:16, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Danny lost: I made a tighter crop. There is some warping, but looks appropriate. This is expected given the map most likely used a different projection from WGS84 which is equirectangular. - DutchTreat (talk) 15:09, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
