Marble statues of Dutch stadtholders in the marble hall (Marmorsaal)

[edit]

On this picture, next to the windows on the left, are three of four marble statues of stadtholders of the Netherlands. They represent the princes William I, Maurice, William II en Frederick Henry of Orange (House of Orange-Nassau). They were created by sculptor François Dieussart (ca. 1600-ca. 1663), made of white marble from Carrara in Italy, ordered by prince Frederick Henry by contract of 19 April 1646. By inheritance they came into possesion of king Frederick I of Prussia, whose mother Louise Henriette was a daughter of prince Frederick Henry of Orange. The statues were destroyed during the bombing of 1945, but zinc castings of the statues, made around the year 1900, remain existent,
