Hunnemannia hintoniorum G.L. Nesom was first collected by George S. Hinton above San José del Río in the municipality of Galeana, Nuevo León, on March 24, 1992. It was described in Phytologia 73(4): 335 map 1. 1992. The photo was taken about 5 km to the north of the type locality. It shares its habitat with Aztekium hintonii, Verbesina hintoniorum, Cheilanthes hintoniorum and the wide spread Selaginella gypsophila. All these plants are restricted to gyspum.
