I oppose the interpretation on the Hierapolis page that this is a sundial. In my mind it was the conch or scallop-decoration atop some niche, so it would be facing down, which does not make sense for a sundial. The decoration is quite impressive, with feathered wings above. I do not see any indication of metal objects that would be needed to indicate hours, and to cast a shadow to start with. Dosseman (talk) 18:38, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
