Copyright and public domain

According to the article John Clayton Adams, this painting is the work of that gentleman, who lived from 1840 to 1906. But the image page carries the {{PD-self}} tag, implying that it has been uploaded by the copyright holder, and placed into the public domain by him. Unless Wikipedia is much older than I thought, this cannot be right. I'm not proposing copyvio-ing the image, as I suspect that the image is actually out of copyright, and this is just a mis-tag.
