Photo or painting

On Wikipedia it calls this "photo by" but it doesn't look like a photograph, was technology back then so undeveloped that it warped people to look blotchy and pastelly? Ty (talk) 19:36, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It appears to me to be a glass plate photograph with color added by hand painting, not uncommon in the era. The pastelly look comes from the paint (may indeed be pastel). The "blotchy" is due to age/decay of the original. -- Infrogmation (talk) 21:04, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
