My mother was the first person born on Halifax Island. Doreen Halifax Gerber 27 August 1926 - 10 June 1994. Her father Martinus Christoffel Gerber was the island keeper. He ran a team of guano collectors who were all prisoners. The only other people on the island were the Lighthouse keeper and his family. My grandfather and his family moved off the island in about 1931. Posted by SHERRI BELL (nee Bailey). August 2010.
