Recategorization as HMCS Algonquin

[edit]

The original description and categorization contended that this was the Halifax-class frigate HMCS Vancouver. Despite this, it is clear that this is not in-fact the HMCS Vancouver, but the Iroquois-class destroyer HMCS Algonquin. In support of the fact that this is not the HMCS Vancouver, observe that the gun is mounted on a platform absent from the Halifax-class but present on the Iroquois-class; second the gun does not appear to be the 57 mm Bofors Mk3 of the Halifax-class, but an OTO Melara 76 mm of the Iroquois-class; third the structure aft of the funnels appears to be roughly rectangular and flat, again unlike the Halifax-class.

In support of its identification as the HMCS Algonquin, first consider that there were 4 ships of the Iroquois class completed, the Iroquois, the Huron, the Athabaskan, and the Algonquin. Since this photo was taken in 2011, it cannot be the Huron, which was sunk in 2007. The Iroquois and the Athabaskan both have 2 radar domes on the structure aft of the funnels which are absent in this photo. On the other hand, the Algonquin does not seem to have these domes in photos even after her refit, so as this photo does not match the other 3 ships of the class, this must be the Algonquin.
