In the sixties there was doubt about the account of the Conway Cabal contained the memoirs of the Marquis de Lafayette. Some historians thought it was inaccurate because there was no room at the Plough Tavern large enough to feed the crowd he described where he toasted Washington in language so strong that Conway's plan to replace the General was thwarted. When then County Planner Jesse Nalle and I tore open the wall that divided the top floor into two rooms we found long iron strap hinges hanging from a beam above that once held a movable wall that could be raised to the ceiling, and open the space to one large room. The aged Marquis was not senile!
