I have checked the orginal source site at NASA and indeed their text is badly incorrect. A simple glance will convince any one that the image does *not* depict any sort of page from a printed page as the NASA text claims.
I have actually held the original in my hands at the University of Michigan. I found out that they held it from an article in Scientific American in the late seventies. Unfortunately Scientific American does not have any article prior to 1992 on line. I will find the article and give a proper reference in a couple of days. (By January 12, 2007)
The original text accompanying this image was from the NASA web page whose URL is still on the image page.

The links under Source are incorrect. At the University of Michigan it should be http://www.lib.umich.edu/special-collections-library/galileo-manuscript
