The caption suggests that the paint scheme is dazzle camoflage to serve as an *aid* in identification. I'm thinking that this is convoluting dazzle camouflage with Invasion Stripes, and that the purpose of the dazzle camouflage is rather the opposite: to impair spotting, identification and rangefinding, either in the air or (probably more likely) when on the surface of the water.
