Corrections

[edit]

There’s some talk about correcting a few dates at File talk:Territorial Expansion of Russia.svg. Please continue discussion there. When we agree on changes, I would enter them in both this file and that copy. (Also talking about adding more languages to that internationalized version of the SVG.) Michael Z. 2021-02-22 18:12 z 18:12, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Saami tribute areas, Bear Island, Russian California

[edit]

Nice map!

I don't have the maps on hand, but I once saw an atlas produced in Finland which showed how various Saami tribes were under tribute to the surrounding kingdoms (Norway, Sweden, Russia) over the course of centuries. Often, the same tribe paid tribute to more than one kingdom at the same time! Nominally, that would mean that the kingdoms overlapped there. I remember seeing that, at times, Russia's tribute area extended very far into what's now northern Sweden and Norway!

Bear Island (Norway) was briefly claimed and occupied by Russia in 1899: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_Island_(Norway)

I once saw a historical atlas which goes into great detail about the specific claims of the various North American powers, including Russia in Alaska and California. I seem to recall that Russia nominally claimed all the way down from Alaska to California, along the watershed crest of the Rockies. And that is claim was only resolved through the treaties with Britain and the U.S.

Sorry I don't have those atlases on hand, but just a head's up for further research. --Traversetravis (talk) 02:52, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Klaipėda Region

[edit]

Hello,

There is an inaccuracy regarding the modern-day borders of Russia: the Russian-Lithuanian border is missing. The Klaipėda Region (also known as the Memel territory) was annexed by the USSR and given back to Lithuania (i.e. the Lithuanian SSR) in 1945, and has been part of Lithuania since then. The map makes it look like that region has been part of the Kaliningrad oblast since 1945.

Also, I understand from the choice of colours that the westernmost part of Ukraine is not coloured in purple on purpose, on the grounds that it has never been formally part of Russia but the USSR only. Indeed, eastern Galicia was annexed in 1939 to the Ukrainian SSR after the invasion of Poland and Ukrainian Transcarpathia (Zakarpatska Oblast) was annexed in 1944-1945. That is not consistent with the colouring of the Klaipėda Region, which has never been part of Russia either. In order to keep the consistency, I see two possible solutions:

  • either creating one or two additional shades of light purple for the Klaipėda Region (1945), eastern Galicia (1939) and Ukrainian Transcarpathia (1945);
  • or simply removing the light green colouring of the Klaipėda region.
