Location of this photo - this is not Ras Dashen or Simien Mountains, but near Aksum in Tigray

[edit]

On many wiki pages, this photo is or was published and announced to represent Ras Dashen mountain, the highest place of Ethiopia. It is a nice photo, but it is NOT Ras Dashen. Land use (vegetation, crops) are typical for altitudes around 2000-2500 metres, not the Afro-alpine 4500 metres of Ras Dashen. We clearly recognise sedimentary rocks, with their sub-horizontal arrangement, not at all the volcanic material that constitutes Ras Dashen. I do not immediately recognise the exact location; the author of the photo mentions "A goat raised by monks overlooks a valley in Axum", so that is not Ras Dashen at all!
