Cropped version

[edit]

{{helpme}}

I've twice tried to upload a cropped version of this file, even renaming it on my pooter to ensure I was uploading the correct file, but it still shows as the original version. Can another editor trim the top and bottom of the picture and uploaad a cropped version please? Also, can the two uploads I did which turned out wrong be deleted? It looks like the issue has now been resolved. Mjroots (talk) 06:44, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Date

[edit]

Just for info: The ship's name was changed between 9 July and 14 October 1948 from Empire Celia to Putney Hill (source: Shields Gazette 12 July and 16 October 1948)
Although not entirely clear, the ship's name appears to be Empire Celia, so this casts doubt on the 3 December 1948 photo date. Davidships (talk) 21:31, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Although there is the possibility that the photo was taken outside Australia, British newspapers make clear that Putney Hill was in or near Cape Town on 3 Dec 1948 (20 Nov sailed Walvis Bay for Cape Town; 9 Dec arrived Durban from Trinidad via Cape Town; 31 Dec sailed for Hamburg).
However, for most of 1947 as Empire Celia, still owned by the Ministry of Transport, though operated by Counties Ship Management, she was on the Australian coast. She arrived in February at Fremantle from the Mediterranean with phosphates. She then went on charter to the Broken Hill Proprietary Co as a collier, mainly moving coal from Newcastle to Melbourne/Adelaide, and finally sailing from Port Pirie in November with wheat for southern Africa. All this is copiously referenced in the Australian newspapers. I have asked the Australian War Memorial whether they can throw any more light on this. - Davidships (talk) 23:48, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
