Open space of the Champ-de-Mars
[edit]One of the attractions of the Exposition Universelle 1889 world fair was the Fontaine monumentale lumineuse or Fontaine du Progrès designed by G. Bechmann (French), ingénieur en chef du service des Eaux and Jean Camille Formigé (French, 1845-1939), architecte de l'exposition. Neo-baroque sculptures by Jules Coutan (French, 1848-1939). It was placed in the center of the open space of the Champ-de-Mars. Beside this Fontaine du Progrès a second illuminated fountain designed by Galloway and Sons was built exactly unter the Eiffel Tower [1] (no file available). Both dissapeared before 1900. For the Exposition Universelle 1900 the central dome was replaced by the Pavillon de l'Electricité and a new fountain called Château d'Eau was erected at the southest end of the Champ-de-Mars.
- N.B.: The first fountains with illuminated water jets, designed by Sir Francis Bolton, had been shown at the International Health Exhibition (1884) in South Kensington district, London. The Royal Jubilee Exhibition in Manchester had illuminated "Fairy Fountains" designed by W. an J. Galloway and Sons, the next (known) ones where built at Glasgow and Barcelona exhibitions (both in 1888).[2][3]
