Mistakes
[edit]What is the source for this map? There are several things to check. Examples:
- The maritime borders to Indonesia are still not definied. Batek Island is not accepted by Timor-Leste to be Indonesian.
- The maritime border to Australia is not correct
- Offshore borders shown on this map are from the source (OSM). I suggest that the easiest solution would be to erase them all and be done with it.Kelisi (talk) 20:01, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- The sea border between Australia and TL is here described. Between Indonesia and TL it is still in negotiations. --JPF (talk) 22:05, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

- There is an airport in Com?
- You're right. Satellite pictures give no hint of a conventional airport at Com. The symbol came from the source. I wonder, though, whether it might indicate a place where seaplanes dock. Those are sometimes marked with the aircraft symbol on OSM (and sometimes even helipads are, too).Kelisi (talk) 20:14, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- There was a heliport during UNMIT times, but it was more a simple field. --JPF (talk) 22:05, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

- "Sede Suco Laisorolai de Baixo" is not a regions name, it is the seat of the administrative entity of Laisorolai de Baixo
- You'll have to take that up with the OSM editor who put that there. There is quite a bit of inconsistency on OSM with typefaces.Kelisi (talk) 20:38, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- You can check the official administrative maps, I have loaded up at Commons. --JPF (talk) 22:05, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

- Local names used on the map are a mixture of Tetum and Portuguese. As there is no official spelling for the Tetum version, I would use the official Portuguese spelling. "Kap Suai" and "Kap Cutch" are German names. ;-)
- OSM is a user-participation site, like WP, and if the Portuguese name isn't there, then I can't do anything about that. For all I know, the names were put on the map by somebody who lives in East Timor and knows the country. Who are we to argue about what some village in the mountains should really be called?Kelisi (talk) 20:38, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- There is a official list for the administrative entities by government. It is using the Portuguese names. The Tetum or even local place names are not having an official spelling. Somethimes there are half a dozen of different for one place. --JPF (talk) 22:05, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
- Und ja, ich wußte schon, dass „Kap“ ein deutsches Wort war, aber das habe ich bei der Quelle gefunden. Wenn du die örtlichen Namen weißt, dann kannst du sie einfügen.Kelisi (talk) 20:38, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- Maybe the source usd the municipality maps I made for German Wikipedia. The local name is "Cabo". --JPF (talk) 22:05, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

- Regions and settlements seem to be chosen very irregular. Many missing.
- You can help. I inserted names using good ol' MSPaint. For towns and villages, I used plain Arial 8-point, in black, of course. That should match perfectly.Kelisi (talk) 20:38, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- Airport Dili is not exactly on the right place.
- Yes it is. Satellite pictures show the airport there.Kelisi (talk) 20:38, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- Well, I would place it a little further north as it reaches until the coast. ;) --JPF (talk) 22:05, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

Generally, OSM is quite good showing settlements, but not very accurate about their names. It is a little bit my fault. Some years ago I have added the coordinates of 3000 places in Timor-Leste on German Wikipedia and someone used these for OSM. But my map sources have not been very good and the coordinates of "geonames" where going sometimes into places far away from any settlements. New, official maps of sucos, administrative post and municipalities have been published by the Timorese Office of Statistics. Still there are several mistakes inside (for example the borders of Baucau and Viqueue municipalities are overlapping), but the villages are marked quite well and the aldeias are first time shown with borderlines. The maps are uploaded on Commons and I am correcting the German article, beside creating new for the villages of Timor-Leste. But it takes time. I still have only Ainaro and Aileu municipalities completed and Dili and Atauro mostly. Still 10 more municipalities to go.
There is a complete list of all administrative entities in German Wikipedia here: de:Liste der Verwaltungseinheiten Osttimors. It is using the offical names and mention the sources. All sucos are having articles in German Wikipedia, but as I said, I still have to update most of them. Greetings, --JPF (talk) 22:05, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
