Wrong Note in British Library

[edit]

In the note of the British Library catalogue it says

View looking along the railway bridge built in 1854 to link Bombay Island with the mainland of Thane. A locomotive and carriages stand on the bridge.

This note seems to be wrong, as it is mentioned also here. The Dapoorie bridge stands near Dapoorie (today writen as Dapodi and stand still today there. It looks like this and this — the number and shape of the arcs on the modern pic is exactly the same as on the old one. A picture of the Tanna Railway Viaduct, to which the note of the British Library refers to, can be found here. the orig. caption seems to mention Bombay since Dapoorie was in the Presidency of Bombay in those days were the pic was taken.--Pechristener (talk) 16:31, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dapodi Viaduct, not called the Harris Railway Bridge, Pune

[edit]

This is the Dapodi Viaduct (Dapodi Railway Bridge), Pune, crossing the River Mula; it's near Pune, and much further down the line from Mumbai and Thana. Its old name was the the "Dapoorie Viaduct" this bridge has impost(s) or Abacus, on the west side but has none on the east side. The Dapoorie Viaduct (today known as Dapodi Viaduct) is not the Harris Bridge, that is the Road bridge in parallel with it, which some maps call in error the Harrison Bridge. Other pics of the original bridge are here and here.

  • Abacus: a slab on top of a capital, supporting the architrave. The uppermost portion of the capital of a column, immediately under the architrave.
  • Impost: the top course of a pillar that supports an arch. The top part of a column, pillar, pier, wall, etc. that supports an arch. --BeckenhamBear (talk) 20:04, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
