I wrongly identified this plant as Mammillaria longimmama as this species grows in the Tolantongo Canyon as well. After reading "The Cactus Family" by Edward F. Anderson (p. 138) we found this plant is actually Coryphantha cornifera, as this species grows not only in the Tolantongo Canyon, but in the whole area aroud Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo. R.D. Dicht and A.D. Lüthy (Coryphantha: cacti of Mexico and Southern USA, p. 65) propose this could be C. cornuta. But at the end of the day they end up regarding C. cornuta as an extrem form of C. cornifera, so it is safe to identify it simply as Coryphantha cornifera.
