Caption claims that this is a serviceman of 2nd Platoon, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment of the US Army. However the de wikipedia caption for this picture is Marine der 2. US-Marine-infanterie division mit M249 SAW im Anschlag (Irak, Januar 2006) i.e. Marine of the Second US Marine Infantry Division attacking with an M249 in Iraq, January 2006. and indeed close examination of the sleeve insignia appears to show a subdued version of the 2nd Marine Division patch. He's from the en:2nd Marine Division (United_States) according to his shoulder patch. Xasodfuih (talk) 17:43, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dudes, this picture is taken from an ARMY hompage, so it will most definitely be NO marine... Think strait 87.176.245.117 21:48, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually he is wearing an ACU (Army Combat Uniform) in UCP/Arpat and has an ACH (Advanced Combat Helmet) on his head, so why should this be a Marine?! MaRuTe (talk) 21:53, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Marines dont were shoulder insignia either, strange, who originality uploaded it?--CnrFallon (talk) 23:14, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
http://www4.army.mil/armyimages/armyimage.php?photo=9012 so, figured it out, hes army attached to a marine unit OK?--CnrFallon (talk) 23:23, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry link is a 404.--Sanandros (talk) 09:17, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The subject of the photo is definately a soldier, and not a Marine. He is wearing the w:Army Combat Uniform, distinctive for its use of the w:Universal Camouflage Pattern. The point of confusion seems to be that his w:shoulder sleeve insignia is that of a Marine unit (specifically, w:2nd Marine Division (United States)). This, however, does not make him a Marine. Sometimes, an Army unit is temporarily detached under the command of a larger Marine unit. Since the Army's rules on shoulder sleeve insignia allow them to wear the insignia of a division they are deployed under, they are permitted to wear the insignia of a Marine unit if they fall under that unit's command. Since it's quite unusual, some soldiers strive to wear these. I will edit the description to fix this. If there are any questions, let me know. Bahamut0013 (talk) 11:43, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

note that the photographer's rank of Lance Corporal makes the credit belong to a Marine. Seems that the photo was taken during some kind of joint operation. Bahamut0013 (talk) 11:48, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
