Minor error

[edit]

I think there's a coloring/selection error: a county in Massachussetts adjacent to Rhode Island that was left gray. -JasonAQuest (talk) 14:43, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@JasonAQuest: Thanks, I've added in Bristol County. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 15:47, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out Massachusetts only has an advisory, not an order, so I cleared out most of the state except for Nantucket, which have their own order. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 19:08, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Showing consolidated city-counties or city-county equivalents

[edit]

There’s quite a long list of entities that are “not shown” – I assume this is because the base map is at the county level and you can’t “color in” only part of a county. However, there are three jurisdictions on the list that are at the county level – the City and County of Denver, the Consolidated City-Borough of Anchorage, and the Consolidated City-Borough of Sitka. They should be shown, just like the Consolidated City-Parish of New Orleans, which is shown in dark blue indicating that New Orleans got a stay-at-home order the week before the rest of Louisiana. – Trorov (talk) 18:11, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I've added Denver County. It turns out Sitka is only under a stay-at-home "recommendation", and I've been excluding non-mandatory measures for maintainability. Indeed, I've been excluding cities and the huge Navajo Nation reservation because of the base map I'm working off of. It's gotten quite frustrating to work with this base map. I'd overlay extra information, except I don't know exactly which projection it uses. I'm tempted to start over with proper mapping tools and export to SVG. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 18:39, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! Note that Anchorage is still called out as not shown in the description. – Trorov (talk) 20:12, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nashville and Davidson County are a consolidated city-county - therefore, Nashville shouldn't be called out in the description as "not shown". – Trorov (talk) 03:17, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata-based map

[edit]

I put together a Wikidata-powered, interactive alternative to this map. See it in action at w:Talk:U.S. state and local government response to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and Data:Stay-at-home orders in the United States.map. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 01:54, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Colors

[edit]

The "before April 12" color is difficult to distinguish from the gray, because it is about the same brightness. A closer-spaced set of colors would be helpful, especially if we need a 5th or 6th value. As a test, I did a search-and-replace on the SVG file to the four darkest of these colors, and it looked good to me. -JasonAQuest (talk) 18:14, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I just switched the map from the 5-stop color scheme to a 6-stop color scheme. (I've been dropping the lightest stop to minimize conflict with the gray background.) If that isn't enough, we can add more stops. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 21:48, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Regional/advisory colors should be added

[edit]

Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Wyoming have regional orders in place - can another color be added for these states? Massachusetts and Kentucky have advisories - a different color should be added for these as well. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 03:56, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Regional orders should be shown by coloring the relevant regions. -JasonAQuest (talk) 13:52, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This map can only show orders at the county and state levels; the only mandatory orders in Oklahoma and Wyoming are at the municipal level, so you'll have to refer to this interactive map instead. If we fill in advisory orders, it would be nice to color them by week as well, ranging from brown to orange, for instance. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 21:50, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New York start date?

[edit]

This page says (in item 1) that New York's order went into effect on March 22 at 8pm, but the map shows the state in the darkest color, indicating it went into effect before that date. 2600:8801:8203:600:1D00:B757:6DA8:67DF 14:02, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, fixed. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 09:11, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Alaska county-equivalents

[edit]

Is there a reason that the map shows state senate districts instead of boroughs and census areas? --Numberguy6 (talk) 17:47, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, that would explain the weird boundaries. This map is based on File:USA counties with territories.svg, which is ultimately from File:Usa counties large.svg. I had assumed it only displayed counties and county equivalents. At one point, I had to manually redraw the Sitka and Anchorage boundaries, thinking they were simply outdated, but you're right that they're state senate districts. It looks like File:Usa counties large.svg has since been redrawn to show boroughs and census areas, so it would be a good idea to reapply all the colors to the most current map. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 09:03, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
