This picture was up loaded as HMS Stirling Castle in 1780, from wrecksite.eu. The original source is probably Bonham's.reference The Blouin Art Sales Index website, advises the painting as British Men-o-War sailing into Cork harbour in choppy seas, Attributed to George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson, (BRITISH, 1806 - 1884) inscribed. The Uploader commented that the title identifies the ship as the (HMS Stirling Castle (1775, a 64-gun third-rate ship) wrecked in 1780; however, the ship pictured is closer in details to the one of the same name launched in 1811, a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line launched in 1811, and hulked in 1839. An alternative opinion is that it is the HMS Ajax which was built in 1809. She was stationed in the mediterranean until 1814, took part in the bombardment of Bomarsund, Finland during the Crimean War and finished her days as the guardship at Kingstown Harbour in Ireland. She was decommissioned in 1864.

The image is also on the front cover of a book. Maritime paintings of Cork and associated historical material, 1700-2000. by Peter Murray (2005). reference reference Google books --Broichmore (talk) 11:03, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
