The soldier standing up promeniently to the left of the coconut tree is almost certainly my uncle, 1st Leuitenant A. Beaty Sherard. This picture appeared in a magazine and was first identified as marines going ashore at Rendova. Subsequently an officer wrote a letter to the magazine stating that they were soldiers, not marines, as he was was familiar with the landing and he also identified my uncle as being the soldier standing. Though it is timeworn, I am now the proud owner of the article and the letter to the editor as this was a keepsake of my family. Unfortunately I can't say with certainty which magazine it was from(we think possibly the Saturday Evening Post) as all that was passed down was the article and the letter which was either cut or torn from the magazine. I'm writing this from my workplace so I do not have with me my uncle's information here with me, such as his unit and soforth. What I do know is that my uncle died from wounds he received not long after this landing. The landing was June 30, 1943 and he was wounded July 14th and died the next day. He was originally buried there in the south Pacific, but his remains were later brought home to South Carolina to be buried. I am very proud to say that my uncle received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions when he was wounded. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.116.212.194 (talk) 20:12, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
