What is its address?

[edit]

On Geograph, this picture is titled “6 Pottergate”. Google Maps[1] claims that this road is Priory Gate, and Jürgen Eissink requested that the file be renamed to match that. On the other hand, both OpenStreetMap[2] and the Ordnance Survey say that this section of road is part of Minster Yard. The National Heritage List for England[3] gives the house a statutory address of “NUMBER 6 AND ATTACHED WALL, 6, MINSTER YARD”. Royal Mail admit the existence of a "6 Minster Yard" (in approximately the right place), but not a “6 Priory Gate” (though they also spell that street name “Priorygate”). @Jürgen Eissink: What's your source for this house’s having an address on Priory Gate? --bjh21 (talk) 11:49, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi bjh21, thanks for your notice. Indeed Google Maps was my source. My initial interest was 3 Pottergate, once the residence of George Boole. Interested in it's surrounding, I made a category on Pottergate, collected there some new uploads and some existing, and then of course the "6 Pottergate"-file came up. So I started to check on Google Maps, comparing also the pictures of numbers 4, 5 and subsequent houses on Pottergate, and concluded that the blue house could not be '6 Pottergate'. I guess you would and do agree with that, but maybe (likely) I jumped to conclusions to fast in thinking it must be Priory Gate: it might indeed be 6 Minster Yard.
Please feel free to change the address and the file name once more (but not back to Pottergate). The question might be interesting enough for others to reflect on, so maybe it's good to raise a question on this issue at the Village Pump? On a second note: the houses to the left of the blue house seem quite easily (as formal adresses) to be identified as 4 and 5 Priory Gate, which makes it more likely that the blue house is 6 Priory Gate, not 6 Minster Yard. But I refrain. Jürgen Eissink (talk) 13:13, 7 May 2019 (UTC).[reply]
I think those are the houses listed by NHLE as "4, 5 AND 5A, MINSTER YARD"[4], and Royal Mail believed in those addresses. --bjh21 (talk) 18:06, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree. I see now that Priory Gate is the short street at the further side of arch, Minster Yard starts at this side of the arch. Thank you for renaming! Jürgen Eissink (talk) 19:13, 7 May 2019 (UTC).[reply]
