This is a large detail of the central figures in We Are All Somnambulists, which was my last major work done in the spring of 1966 before graduating from Carnegie Tech and plunging into a new manner of painting that summer with Ship of Fools. The three heroines are actresses from the Drama Department of which the foremost in the yellow dress leads with determined resignation which is simply the way she had wished to be seen. Sometime in the mid-seventies once I move to East Seventh Street and am fully engaged in grattage works, I erase several other figures, leaving one but a palimsest surfacing through the scraping. But these three remain intact.
We are All Somnambulists is placed on an ad page in Artforum summer 2002. The last of a series of ad pages that like Ship of Fools, which began in December 2001, act as witness to the wars that we as a nation have entered as if somnambulists.
