Description of the Map

The map shows the settlement area of the Western Slavs (Polabs in the north, Sorbs in the south) at the time of their greatest expansion west of the Elbe, perhaps in the 9th/10th centuries. There are river names: Elbe/Laba in the north, Dunav/Danube in the south, in the centre, west of the shaded area the river Fulda. There are also some town names, e.g. Nüremberg and above all Bamberg: the archbishopric of Bamberg was founded to Christianise the Slavs who had come far west across the Elbe. There are also names of peoples, e.g. in the West Frisy, Sachsy, Franky, Allemanny Bärbel Miemietz (talk) 22:14, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
