Who removed the category "snakes"?

[edit]

Okay, who removed the category "snakes"? Do you realise that if a person comes to commons and searches for "snake", they now get NOTHING? And that they'll only ever see this picture if they look through "serpentes" > "alethinophidia" > "elapidae" > "notechis"? Talk about making life difficult. That will have been my doing. The category "Snakes" was full of images awaiting identification, so that's what I did. It's empty now, although it's still there. It looked like a random collection that included many poor images, so I never stopped to think that anyone else might regard it as useful. Besides, if a person comes to Wikimedia Commons and searches for "snake," they were not going to end up in that category anyway. Also, "Snake" is a redirect that currently points to category "Serpentes." Actually, why don't we create an article called "Serpentes," for which "Snake" can be a redirect, populated with some of our best images to represent the current list of snake families? Then people who come here and search for "Snake" will actually find something useful. --Jwinius (talk) 21:53, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have a look: Serpentes. It may not be perfect, but it's a start and hopefully others will get the idea. --Jwinius (talk) 22:50, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm impressed that you actually identified all the snakes! And your new Serpentes page is a great addition, although it doesn't link down to the family pages. So now, what does someone do to have their snake photo findable and usable by anyone? What category/categories do they use? Ian Fieggen (talk) 02:29, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just dump it in the Snakes category again. Over time I imagine that it will fill up again, after which I will eventually stop by to sort it all out. --Jwinius (talk) 02:42, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
