There is a substantial portion of the world root chicory crop grown and exported from South Africa. The seed is all imported from France and production has historically been on dry land in a region with a medium rainfall pattern in an area with overlapping mediteranean (winter rainfall) and early summer rainfall. The production is managed by a semi government organisation called "Chicory SA" with headquarters in a little town called Alexandria which is situated 100 kilometres North East of Port Elizabeth. Cultivation is labour intensive as there is currently no known herbicide that can control weeds without killing the chicory plant. Crop collection is all manual to lift the roots by chisel plough and topping the leaves off the plant before forwarding it to the processing plant. There is a large rotary drier established that is fired by anthracite. The root is washed and diced into 15 - 20mm cubes before being dried. The baked final product is then sold to local and export markets for blending coffee as well as a fair amount being sold to the pharmacutical industry to be used in many types of medicinal formulas.
