This second version of Biafran Madonns shows the influence of African sculpture so visible in Paris in the autumn of 1968 and marks a distinct departure from Rappaport's first version which seems more Romanesque in general mood and clearly owes a debt to Picasso's Weeping Woman of 1937 at the Tate, whose image of a crying Dora Maar slmost inhaling her handkerchief is quoted.
