Most of this alignment was originally proposed as the Boston & Winthrop Railroad in 1881 but never constructed. It was incorporated into the Boston, Winthrop & Shore Railroad in December 1883 but still not constructed. When the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad assumed control of the Boston, Winthrop & Shore in 1886, it started to develop the alignment shown in this plan as a branch off the BW&S mainline to the Winthrop Center area. After further consideration, the BRB&L decided instead to construct a loop route through the Winthrop peninsula and use this alignment as part of that loop. This plan shows the line before that decision was made, when it was still conceived as a branch line.
