Repainted?

[edit]

It's clearly a woman, but the face strongly resembles that of young Shah Jahan. Moreover, the lady's gaze away from Jahangir seems a bit strange for a subordinate 15th wife or concubine who receives a personal favor from the 'emperor of the world'. However, we know from Shah Jahan's chronicles that Shah Jahan did not like wine and only drank not to offend his father - drinking was an essential part of the court ceremonial and a legacy from Gengis Khan. Shah Jahan later abolished it at court.

So could it be that this painting has been repainted, perhaps in Shah Jahan's ateliers? This would wipe out the memory of a more licentious young Shah Jahan, before he became pious and austere. Are there any similar paintings to compare? --Curryfranke (talk) 13:46, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
