About the color saturation

[edit]

Hello, thank you for renewing these Hiroshige pics.

But let me talk about the colors. I have to say... these colors are incredibly oversaturated, and they seem to have gone a little too far than acceptable.

As you know, compositions of moderate colors are one of the most important factors of an artwork. Unnecessarily strong colors could easily destroy the atmosphere of one. And I believe these matters are especially important on Japanese traditional art, which is based on the aesthetics of wabi-sabi, iki, etc.

So, why don't you think about re-editing the pics to drop the saturation values a little bit? (In my opinion, you could drop them at least by 50%, or 70% may be better in some pics.)

By the way, as for the resolution of the pics, the new ones are great. Small lines are now clearly watchable, and this is great fun. And at any rate, I appreciate your labors.

Sorry for my poor English. Thanks. Sewmew (talk) 13:08, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am by no means an expert in Japanese art. But I would agree with you. Trying to restore the colors from before the paper became more yellow with age is one thing, but the new versions have lost in subtility and atmosphere. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 13:13, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
