Identifying the pics

[edit]

Thanks. These things are hard to identify sometimes. Looks like some of these are yours. Again, thanks. Sorry to trouble you. The basic problem is, very few people state what the object is or where it comes from. If you are right there you can repeat what the museum sign says. What I would like to see especially is a statement of what site the object comes from. If we have a date and a site we can easily build a gallery or illustrate a section in an article as well as properly categorize the object. This is not a discussion as I am not questioning your judgement and I accept you questioning mine. It is only a thought. If you can do more it would be easier for categorizers like me. Thanks. @Botteville: no trouble at all, thank you for your work of categorizing in a better way the pictures. I often add general descriptions to my upload in order to speed up the process and add more pictures, but in many cases I can give more informations if requested. Yes, I uploaded a fair amount of pictures from the collections of that museum, but unfortunatly I do not live in Thessaloniki, so I could not check the object again. I usually take pictures to the museum signs too when I photograph objects in museums, to add later a good categorization, but sometimes this is not possible (lack of time, lack of space, lack of museum signs...) and I fear this case is one I do not have the picture of the sign, since I categorized it in the root category for the museum (that's where I put pictures of objects I was not sure about; I never guess if I'm not sure, because this could spread misinformation). What I can do is to check in my hard drive in the next days if I have the sign too. Just trying to recall the information by memory, I would say it is a pottery decoration for some part of a building or forniture, but I cannot be sure, is an object I spent a few seconds watching more than one year ago. I hope I can find some data in my hard drive, if not I will anyway inform you if this will not bother you. :-) --Phyrexian ɸ 06:18, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your further effort and concern. I'm not bothered. Some pictures are better than no pictures. Whatever you can do is appreciated, I'm sure. You're right, we don't want to promulgate conjectures as facts. That is the toughest fight of all in communication. That object does look like pottery, but if we don't know, we shouldn't guess, at least not in public. Maybe it should be in the "object" category. Good luck. @Botteville: so, I checked my hard drive, and I have partially good news. The good news is I photographed the museum sign about this object; the bad news is the sign describes two different objects, and I cannot determine which description refers to the ones in this picture, because I did not photograph the other ones. The sign states this:

Above: Fragments from the decoration of wooden boxes, Sindos cemetery 470 - 460 B.C.
Below: Fragments from a decoration of a wooden bed that was burnt together with the deceased. Displayed on their approximate position. Chamber tomb, Aghios Athanassios, Thessaloniki. Late 4th c. B.C.

So, at least we know that are wooden decorations. If with those little informations you can find out if the picture is about the bed or the box feel free to update the picture's informations and categories. I really think is the first case (wooden boxes), but again, I cannot rely just on my memory. --Phyrexian ɸ 11:59, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If we can't figure out what it is I think we have to leave it or put it under "objects." CiaoBotteville (talk) 14:23, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
