Description

The Zugspitzbahn, at the Eibsee station near the base of the Zugspitze. The train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen is arriving, and will go to the top. It is a rack railway up the mountain, but the first part is a conventional railway . The train has a locomotive, on the "downhill" side. The Zugspitze is Germany's highest mountain. The summit is 2,962 m (9,715 ft) above sea level.

The Zugspitzbahn starts at Garmisch-Partenkirchen (708 m / 2,323 ft). I boarded the train at the Eibsee station (1,008 m / 3,306 ft). The end station in 1960, Schneefernerhaus, was 2,650 m (8,692 ft). The Zugspitzbahn climbed 1,642 m (5,386 ft) in 7.9 km (4.9 mules). This is an average grade of 21% The maximum grade is 25%.
